The most common style of flow yoga is Vinyasa Flow, with more recent adaptations, such as Inside Flow, rapidly gaining popularity. Although the most commonly known as Vinyasa Flow, there are many different styles of flow yoga. The next thought is, "I thought they were two different styles of yoga. It may seem like yoga styles are all basically the same, but in reality more than a hundred different schools of yoga exist. Slow flow tends to spend more time during grounding and centering, Pranayama, meditation, the warm-up and the cool-down portions of class, than we would in a vinyasa sequence. With all that said, teachers certainly have the freedom to build their slow flow sequence to suit their students’ needs. As this Yoga International article explains "our yoga practice should have moments in which we can stop and feel what we are feeling. Practice your sequence and the transitions described above. Most comprise an energizing sequence with focus on stamina, strength and breath, often with a theme incorporated. Flow yoga classes tend to be a mixture of meditation, breath-work and energizing movement. This continuous flow of movement and breath generates a meditative state, encouraging practitioners to let go of thought and focus on experience of the present moment.

In flow yoga, each movement into or out of a posture is timed with an inhalation or an exhalation in a choreographed sequence. You can even include Surya Namaskar A (Sun Salutation A) in your sequence and modify the vinyasa portion. Vinyasa classes are dynamic and faster-paced, with sequences that build up in intensity over time, there may even be a peak pose. Even more so if the teacher starts cueing inhales and exhales to certain movements, while you are still quite new to the whole world of yoga and the poses aren’t familiar to you. If your students like a challenge every now and then, throw in a balancing Ardha Chandrasana (Half Moon pose) - cueing for modifications of course. Side Note: There is nothing wrong with a little challenge! Do a little research on flow yoga and you run across this term "Ashtanga Vinyasa". Flow yoga is the general term given to any style of yoga asana in which the practitioner moves dynamically from one posture immediately into another, following the breath. It would not make sense in your flow to hold every single posture for 5-10 breaths.

These longer held postures allow the student to explore the posture more profoundly in their body. This leaves a narrower time frame for standing and balancing postures than in your typical flow class. It may allow more time for Pranayama, meditation, and include Yin and/or Restorative type postures. Practice the timing, the holds in various postures and teach from your heart. During a slow flow class not only do we include longer holds in postures, but transitions are practiced at a slower pace as well (see below for more detail on transitions). So again, modify the postures, pace, and transitions to meet your students where they are. These places, with Essential Spirit filled, are then like iron or steel.
