How to Replace an audi a4 key replacement G28 Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the top of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear. It transmits a signal the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer within the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

Located on the edge of the transmission just above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using the grey wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference to correlate with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can trigger spark and injectors in the right way.

If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of line with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate the possibility of a chain stretch or jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit challenging as there are two different connector pins and they serve different purposes but the most effective method of testing it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. It should read around 1000 ohms when it is operating at its maximum. Examine for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are issues with this component.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power like the engine is out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine without sparks, I put a piece of tissue on the top of each hole in the injector and the 3 drenched with gazoline pop out, but the 4th stays shut. I checked the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got 0ohm. I assume that the problem is in another location.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and is running fine when it is connected, but still is experiencing intermittent misfires at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value that is -49c even after unplugging it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars when the actual pressure is 0.

I'm not sure what to do. I feel like i've pretty much all other possibilities out. But i'm worried that I might have missed something. Let me know If you have any suggestions! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 sender, and both operate on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find the spare in a salvage shop or parts store. It is simple to test them to do - just put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's side up) and 2 (2nd from the left on the black connector's side). They must be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY, and ADU) engines are equipped with an ECU that has to be aware of the speed and position of the crankshaft in order to make decisions about timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It utilizes a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to accomplish this. If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger the engine shutting down.

The signs of a failing G28 sensor include an inaccurate gearbox rev counter, gears shifting quicker than normal, and/or a misfire when in gear. If you have any of these issues it is most likely that your sensor is deteriorating and should be replaced. They're cheap and easy to find especially in the case of a Bosch sensor like ours. 5. Tachometer

A damaged engine sensor could cause a variety of issues within your vehicle. It is a crucial part of your audi replacement key service's transmission, since it relays information to the ECU about how fast or slow the vehicle's crankshaft is spinning. You should see approximately 1000 ohms of resistance between these two points.
