World of Warcraft Item Upgrades
The upgrade of an item can be used to improve the stats of an item. Based on the type of upgrade, it may increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level and increase other stats.
Each item has a track for upgrading it. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item upgrading by a certain amount.
Item Level
The value of an item upgrader's basic stats increases as it is upgraded. This value is the total of all the leveled up advantages (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades to items can be costly depending on the upgrader you choose and what kind of upgrade you decide to make. This is due to the number of perks that must be modified to upgrade an item.
The level of an item is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all tooltips of items. It can also be used to determine a gating condition when queueing for dungeons, scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear a player can wear (since PvP is capped at the lower levels). Players can view their average level of items on their character sheet.
Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's a sign of the damage and its quality. The level of an item can be used to evaluate items when looking at a vendor's inventory.
On PC, you are able to see the level of the item by pressing ALT or by using the left stick on XB1 or PS4. This will display the complete item description, including its level. It can also be located by hovering an item with the mouse cursor, and then typing /itemlevel into chat.
There are a few theories about how the calculation of an item's level is done. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the value of an item's stats are worth. It considers the fact that various perks have different value, and also that gems in sockets add to the value of the item overall. This can result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is typically close to the actual Blizzard item level.
However, this isn't the only factor that affects an item's ilvl, because the size of the area the item was dropped in could change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its crit rating or haste rating. Items dropped in higher-level instances will have higher ilvl.
Item Stats
The stats of an item can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses a lot of them in various ways to encourage players to play with a variety of weapons, and also to stop one weapon from being "the most effective." The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. These stat mods are then boosted by a player's level.
Upgrades to an item can boost its stats. The rarity of an item determines the cost of upgrading. A white or grey item, for example, will only be upgraded one time, while an item with rare tiers may be upgraded several times at more expensive costs.
Another way to change the stats of an item is by affixing it. They are stat boosts which can be added by the player to an item. Affixes can do things like give the item additional damage, or add a unique ability to the item (such as reviving dead or reducing the cooldowns), or make the item unique by giving a special name to the item.
All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade window and pressing the green button. It will cost a set amount in gold and items. They can also be used as upgrade gauges similar to other rerolling methods.
Players can choose to upgrade an item by a specific stat, or reroll the affixes. The possible stat ranges of an Best item upgrade are based on the level of the item, however all items are guaranteed to have at minimum one stat within the range, unless it's an item that is unique or a God roll from a boss in a raid.
Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to roll the attachments, or pick which stats to increase. Like base equipment, it would have to be done per item, and the interface for item comparison would not display all the possible stats at once.
Item Luck
The Luck stat of a player stacks up to increase the chances of finding items as well as the properties that appear on loot drops and the intensity of these properties. However, it does not directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It gives the player a chance to acquire better equipment in earlier waves, and is therefore more useful in the early game than in later ones, as most players prioritize higher weapon scaling and defenses over damage gains.
In addition to influencing item discovery, Luck also increases the chance of being successful when upgrading items using the Blacksmith. This is not to confuse with the Blacksmith’s overall chance of upgrading, which increase with each item level. They can also be increased by using anti-materials like a Scroll of Strength and a Jewel of Blessing.
Armor, shields and weapons can spawn or be crafted by using the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can then be enhanced with golden ingots, spined leather, or oak boards (depending on the material of the item) to grant a further +40 Luck or to increase the Luck of the item up to 140.
Additionally some items, like the Hollow weapon that is infused with hollow can be used to increase the damage of any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available at the store or made using the correct ingredients.
Item Failure
Item upgrades are a costly process and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it fails.
When you upgrade an item the success rate is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage indicates the probability of successful upgrading an item. This can be increased with Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to how much success rates can be increased and the probability of an upgrade failing can't exceed 100%.
The success of an can be affected by the luck of that item. Each item has an overall success rate of 25%, and every item with Luck increases the chance of success by 5%.
The upgrade item overlays for items are rendered above items in the inventory. This may block enchantment effects as well as other effects. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
