World of Warcraft Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a way to increase the stats of an item. Depending on the type of upgrade you choose, it can boost the rarity of an item, or its Mark Level and boost additional stats.

The process of upgrading gear in The War Within requires a specified number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item has an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the next item by a specific amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's stats base increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all the upgraded perks (attack, magic attack and defense). Upgrades can be costly, depending on who you hire and what you do. This is due to the number of perks that need to be modified to upgrade an item.

Item level is a widely used measure of power, and is visible on all item tooltips. It also serves as a gating requirement while waiting to queue for dungeons and scenarios, and raids, as well as to limit the amount of PvP gear players can wear (since PvP is capped at an lower level). Players can see their average level of item on their character sheet.

The level of an item can help players compare the power of equipment when deciding to purchase or sell. It's an indicator of the item's condition and quality. The item upgrader mod level can also be used to evaluate items when looking at the inventory of a vendor.

The item level can be seen by pressing the ALT key on your PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will display the full description of the item, including its ilvl. You can also find it by hovering over an item and typing /itemlevel in chat.

There are several theories about the method by which the level of an item is calculated. One theory states that the level of an item is determined by a formula that calculates the worth of the stats of an item really are. It takes into consideration that different benefits are valued differently and that gems in the sockets boost the value of the item. This process could result in a calculated value for the item's ilvl which is usually quite close to Blizzard's actual item level.

However, this isn't the only factor which determines the ilvl of an item, as the level of the area the item was dropped in could alter the value of its stats, such as by adding a level to its haste or crit rating. This means that items dropped at higher levels will have more value than items dropped in lower-level instances.

Item Stats

The item's stats can determine the fate of an item for players. The game uses them in various ways to encourage players not to limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The base stats of a weapon are enhanced by the weapon's stat modifications which are then enhanced by the player's level.

Upgrades to the item add by boosting certain stats on the item. The upgrade costs are determined by the rarity of the item. An item that is white or grey for instance, will only be upgraded once however, items with rare tiers can be upgraded multiple times at more expensive costs.

Affixes are another way to alter the stats of an item. These are special stat boosts that can be added to an item by the player, and are available in all shapes and sizes. The affixes could do things like give the item additional damage, or give a specific ability to the item (such as reviving the dead or cutting down the cooldowns) or make the item unique by putting an additional name to the item.

All affixes can be re-rolled at the moment by selecting them in the upgrade menu and pressing the green button. This will cost a certain amount in gold and other items. These can be used as upgrade gauges, similar to other rerolling methods.

Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll attaches. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However each item will have at least one stat in that range unless they are an exclusive item, or the item is a God Roll from a raid boss.

This is another aspect that could be changed by introducing an option to upgrade the equipment without rolling the affixes, or selecting which stats to enhance. But, like base equipment, this would need to be performed on a per-item level, and the item compare interface will not show all the stats that could be that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player boosts the probability of obtaining items and the properties that are spawned by loot and the strength of these properties. However, it doesn't directly affect damage or ability to upgrade items. It simply gives the player a chance to acquire better equipment earlier in the game, and is therefore more valuable in the initial game run than in later ones, since most players prefer more powerful weapon scaling and defenses over the raw damage gain.

Luck can also increase the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This is not to be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading, which increases with each level of the item upgrading and can be further enhanced through the use of an anti-material such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons can be created or spawned with the Luck property, which has the default value of 40. These items can be enhanced with golden ingots or spined leather (depending on the material they are made of) to add another 40 luck or to boost an item's existing Luck up to 140.

Certain items, such as the weapon with Hollow-infused components can also be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any ability that causes damage by five percent. These items can be purchased in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Item Failure

Item upgrades are expensive and not every upgrade will be successful. Cash shop items can be used to increase the success rate of an upgrade, or to protect players from losing their items if it fails.

When you upgrade an item the success rate is shown in the Honing UI. The percentage is the chances of successfully upgrading the item and it can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. There are limits to the extent to which success rates can be increased, and the overall chance of an upgrade failing can't be greater than 100%..

The luck of an item can also affect the effectiveness of an upgrade. Each item has a success rate of 25 percent, and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5percent.

Note that Best item upgrade upgrades are rendered above the inventory items therefore enchantment glints and other effects could be masked by the overlays. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
