How to Replace an audi key G28 Engine Speed Sensor
Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. This sensor is situated near the transmission's edge just above the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via an uncolored wire (T55/49) which is then sent to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.
1. Engine Speed Sensor
The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. This sensor sends an electrical signal through the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the boost, fuel, and timig. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer within the instrument cluster.
The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu must know when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is located so that it can activate spark and injectors in the right way.
If this sensor fails when it fails, the ECU will display a P00160 error code. This means that the Crank Shaft is out of sync with the Intake Camshaft. It could also indicate an issue with the chain or a jumpy chain link in the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).
It's a bit tricky to test because there are several pins on the connector and they all have different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is functional, it should read around 1000 ohms. If you're experiencing issues with this part, check for signs of coolant or oil in the connector bay.
2. Injectors
Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll, i experienced a big cut in power as if the engine was running out of gas or the injectors aren't firing anymore. I took out the spark plugs this morning and found that 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was dry. When I start the engine without sparks, i place a tissue on top of each injector hole and the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th one stays closed. I tried to test the ground connections of ECU pins 14,30, and 48/55. I got zero ohm. So i assume the problem is in another place.
I also tried to reset the PID without success. The car is able to start when the G28 is not plugged in and it runs perfectly when it is plugged in however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temp value -49c even when i unplug it. I also noticed that the oil gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bars but the actual pressure is 0.
I don't know what to do. I feel like i've pretty much ruled everything else out. I'm worried that i might have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!
3. Fuel Pump
The fuel pump in the g28 is activated by a signal sent by the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter is identical to the G4 and both are used in the 80 100, 200, UrS and RS2 cars so you can easily find one at a salvage yard or in a local parts store. Testing them is easy - put your DMM in resistance mode and take measurements between pins 1 (with the bump on the connector's end up) and 2 (2nd from left on the black end of the connector). They must be infinite Ohms.
4. ECU
Our 20vt turbo (3B, AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that needs to know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make a decision about fuel injector timing etc. In order to do this it utilizes a Crank Position Sensor (G4) and an Engine Speed Sensor (G28). If you have a problem with either of these, the diagnostic scanner will display the codes that could trigger an engine shut down.
A malfunctioning G28 sensor could result in an inaccurate gearbox speed counter or a gearbox that shifts faster than normal, and/or a misfire while in gear. It is possible that the sensor is failing and requires to be replaced if you experience any of these symptoms. They are cheap and easy-to-find particularly if they're a Bosch model like ours. Alternatively, the GM version of this part is also a good option.
5. Tachometer
A malfunctioning engine sensor can cause a number of problems in your car.
